What is "freedom"? (part 1)

For those of you who don't know, I'm taking a thought-provoking, discussion-catalyzing, nearly mind-boggling course called "Spiritual But Not Religious: American Spirituality Past and Present."
So far, we've talked about Oprah, Kanye West, Jim Carrey... Macklemore and Mumford & Sons... the Olympics... Transcendentalism, individualism, Christian Science, New Thought...

On this blog, I'll be writing some of my thoughts and reactions to the class content.

On this post, I'll tackle my idea of "freedom." What does it really mean from the Christian perspective? Here are my thoughts.

I follow God and not necessarily a religion. I do not follow rules or a check-list of deeds I need to do. Nor do I believe that spirituality should be watered down to a list of vices to avoid. If good works earned salvation, then I would fail because no matter how hard I try to be good, I will never be perfect. This is where God comes in and gives me a grace that covers the multitude of my sins and a grace that changes my heart to live for Him and not for me. Because Jesus saved me, now I follow Him not out of obligation, not out of fear, but out of love. That is freedom.

Look out for part 2 coming soon!...
