As we disembarked from the bus, we traversed icy paths to get to our destination. Well, lo and behold, I nearly slipped. My shoes were definitely not made for trekking across really icy/snowy/frozen paths. Instead, I should have had discernment and walked on the asphalt road.
And then, as if my mind was out of whack and vision clouded with mud, I almost got ran over by a car as it was rounding the bend.
Discernment.
We all need it.
Keep our eyes peeled, our wits sharp.
Who knew that I'd find Sherlock at Church.
| whoa, looks like Sherlock is...praying?! |
Yup, the pastor mentioned Sherlock today. #fangirling
One theme of the message that morning was that to discern is important.
We, 'as sheep', as Christians, must discern between good and evil.
We need to see clearly.
Sherlock does this well.
Our culture pressures us to accept everything. Pluralism is rampant. But we need to be on our guard. There are wolves out there dressed as sheep..... yes, this is scary to think, and I was definitely a bit scared when I first heard the pastor say this, but I do agree. We need to discern.
This doesn't mean that we judge. We shouldn't judge at all because God is the one, the righteous judge. But what we can do is discern.
In Malachi 2, the prophet has to share with the people a message from God. Man oh man, just imagine being Malachi having to tell the people that God will "smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices"...basically, poo on your pastor's face. Yes, this is a really bold and striking image (and a bit gross lol) but our pastor explainedthat God probably said this to really hit it home in our hearts. Because He loves us so much, He wants to protect us from wrong teachings. He wants to teach and lead us down the right path, not the wrong one.
And so, let us go to God and ask Him for wisdom and guidance.
What did you think about that passage? Particularly that image...why do you think God told Malachi to share that message with the people?
